CAPÍTULO 3 - ¿Qué pasa en el mundo?

You MUST review the Preterite. Check the G&V page 35 on this chapter (click link), and the image below:

Besides the verbs in the box above, conjugate the following (in the Preterite): entrevistar, investigar, participar, salvar, enterarse, estar, leer, ser, ver, contribuir, decidir, divertirse, escribir, sufrir, and others. Pay attention to the verbs tocar, llegar, comenzar (review the bottom of the box above). LIBRO pages 104 - 108 are important!

Go to the Aventura G&V pages  and review and work on the following Chapter 3 pages: 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 42, 43 and 44. It's essential that you know the Preterite and the Imperfect of Regular and Irregular Verbs.  Also check: http://www.studyspanish.com/lessons/pret5.htm (StudySpanish.com). Review the following verbs in the Imperfect: estar, estudiar, jugar, practicar, haber, hacer, leer, ser, tener, escribir, ir, pedir, vivir,  divertirse.
Preterite of Verbos Decir, Traer & Ver
You must understand when to use the Preterite and when to use the Imperfect. Check G&V page 46 and page 47. It is common to use both the Imperfect and the Preterite in a sentence. Several verbs change in meaning depending whether they are used in the Preterite or the Imperfect, check G&V page 48 to check this. Also check: StudySpanish.com/PreteritevsImperfect. LIBRO pages 115-117, pages 124 and 125, and page 127.

The verbo GUSTAR IS  DIFFERENT (you use the Indirect Object Pronouns - ME TE LE NOS OS LES). Remember that in the Present Tense you only use GUSTA with singular nouns and the infinitive, and GUSTAN with plural nouns. Examples: A mí me gusta la pizza, a ellos les gusta bailar, a nosotros nos gustan los tacos. In the Preterite Tense (only GUSTÓ or GUSTARON): A mí me gustó la pizza, a ellos les gustó bailar, a nosotros nos gustaron los tacos. In the Imperfect Tense (only GUSTABA or GUSTABAN): A mí me gustaba la pizza, a ellos les gustaba bailar, a nosotros nos gustaban los tacos. Come up with more examples! It is GOOD PRACTICE!

G&V page 41 reviews the time expressions with "hace." When do you use "hace -time- que" + Present Tense or Preterite or Imperfect of Verb? Examples: Hace tiempo que no iba al cine (it's been a while -a long time- since I went to the movies); hace años que no pinto (it's been years since I painted); hace tres días que fuí a la casa de mi amiga (It's been three days since I went to my friend's house); hace una semana que no bailaba (It's been a week since I danced). LIBRO page 114.

On G&V page 50 you will learn the Pluperfect Tense (Past Perfect) - el Pretérito Pluscuamperfecto, which consists of the Imperfect Form of the Verbo Haber followed by a past participle. The past participle of estudiar is estudiado.
Practice with other verbs: cantar - cantado, bailar - bailado, estar - estado, preparar - preparado, viajar - viajado,  comer - comido, ir - ido, leer- leído, tener - tenido, ser - sido. Notice that -AR verbs end in "ado," -ER and -IR verbs in "ido." Complete G&V page 51 to practice. Exceptions: hacer - hecho, decir - dicho. ver - visto. Also check: http://www.studyspanish.com/verbs/lessons/pastperfect.htm. Also check your LIBRO page 134 for verbs with regular and irregular participles. Exercise No. 23 on page 135 is important too!

For verb conjugations (different tenses) check: http://www.spanishdict.com/conjugate/hacer.

The last thing on this chapter is "Relative Pronouns." Check LIBRO pages 136 and 137. Also check G&V page 52 and page 53.

¡Buena suerte!

CHAPTER 2 - En Familia

Lesson A:

In this chapter you will review again the "Present Progressive" on Vocabulario II - Verbo Estar + Present Participle (gerund). You probably remember this well from Spanish II - check the links on the Spanish II Blog. And check these G&V pages to review: G&V page 20 and G&V page 21. Also review/study the "Estructura" on page 63. Suggestion: review Verbos estar, ser, tener and llevar (and all the present tense of verbos -AR, -ER and -IR including regular and irregular verbs).

Find verbs in this chapter and challenge yourselves to see if you remember how to conjugate them in the present tense, i.e. sacar, querer, poner, conocer, vivir, preferir, etc. (some are stem-changing verbs, recognize which ones?). Also review the "question words" (cómo, quién, dónde, qué, por qué, etc.).

You should review "family members" (La Familia) in Spanish, and do exercise No. 2 on page 51. Also, "Palabras afirmativas y negativas" on page 54, and affirmative and negative expressions on page 55 ("Estructura") are very important in this lesson (write them in your notebooks or photocopy the "Repaso rápido" and paste it). Work on exercise No. 7 on that page and review G&V page 18.

"Complementos Directos" on page 62 and exercise No. 18 are also important. You cannot forget the Direct Object Pronouns (DOP's). You can check some of the links on the Spanish I Blog.

You will also learn the "impersonal use of se." Check: G&V page 22. Also check page 66 in your textbook.

Lesson B:

Morning routines are covered in this lesson. You must remember the Reflexive Pronouns (first song) - ME TE SE NOS OS SE and how to use them with the reflexive verbs mentioned (pintarse, secarse, lavarse, and the others mentioned in the "Extra" box on page 71). Check the "Estructura" on page 74 on reflexive verbs and proper constructions. Remember: you can attach pronouns to the end of infinitives and gerunds. Examples: Él se está vistiendo - Él está vistiéndose. Work on exercise No. 7, page 74 to practice, and Nos. 8 and 10 on page 75. Also check the G&V page 24 here and G&V page 25 here.

For "Other reflexive constructions," check page 76 and exercise No. 11; and for "Acciones recíprocas" page 78 and exercises No. 15 on this page and 16 (on page 79). Check: G&V page 26 and G&V page 27 here.

In Vocabulario II you will learn about chores (quehaceres). On page 84 you will review the Imperative Mood (Mandatos Informales Afirmativos). Review the "Estructura" carefully! You should have this information in your notebooks. Check: G&V page 30.

And finally, the prepositions of place on page 87 and G&V page 31, and G&V page 32.Quizlet here: PofP and other sites here PofP2 and PofP3.

¡Buena suerte! y ¡saludes!

¡Hola Chicas! CHAPTER 1 - ¡Bienvenidos!

¡Espero que estén muy bien! I hope you are all doing fine! I will attempt to create a Spanish III Blog to guide you a bit. I will include many links, so make sure you check the "Fave" Links section often.

Chapter 1 - ¡Bienvenidos!

Lección A - Vocabulario I "Comienzan las clases"

Make sure you know the following words: enseguida, obedecer, pasándola, prisa, miembro, igualmente, and the other vocab ("Palabras y Expresiones") on page 23. It is also very important to review the Present Tense of Regular and Irregular Verbs, review/study page 6 and this G&V page 2 (click link)You can also go back to the Spanish I and II Blogs to review (check the "Fave" Links on the right side).

Study verbs that end in -cer and -cir on page 8, such as "conocer" and "conducir." The "Yo form" of these verbs change: Yo conozco; Yo conduzco. Practice conjugating the verbs on the "Estructura." An exception is the verb "convencer" (to convince) - Yo convenzo (since there's an "n" before "cer"). Another -cer verb is "padecer" (to suffer, to have an illness) - Yo padezco de ansiedad (I suffer from anxiety). Check this G&V page 4 to review (click link).

Lección A - Vocabulario II "Clases y horarios"

Remember that you use the Verbo Ser for descriptions. It is a good idea to review the Verbos Ser y Estar and their uses. Check: Spanish I Blog. Also review the Verbo Tener (to have). Check G&V page 5 (click link) and review the Present Tense of all the verbs there - IR, TENER, COMER, LLEVAR, LEVANTARSE (a Reflexive Verb), ESTUDIAR, HACER, JUGAR (a Stem-Changing Verb U:UE).

Review "Adjectives" on pages 18 and 19. Adjectives change with gender and number, except the adjectives that end with an "e" like inteligente. Él es inteligente, ellos son inteligentes, ella es inteligente, etc. Egoísta doesn't change for males and females: Él es egoísta, ella es egoísta, ellos son egoístas. Exercise No. 26 on page 18 is important! Try to come up with other examples. Check this G&V page 8 and G&V page 9 (click links).

You should review all the exercises on Lección A and try to understand them. Of course the main thing is to follow the teacher's instructions.

Lección B -  Vocabulario I "Después de las clases"

It is important in this lesson to know the difference between ¿Qué? and ¿Cuál? (when to use one or the other), check the link under "Fave" Links to watch a Señor Jordan video. Sometimes both of them mean "what" but it varies with use and it's a little tricky!

Also check this link at http://spanish.about.com/cs/grammar/a/que_vs_cual.htm for a good explanation. Also read and complete the G&V page 12. Review the "Verbo Ser" in G&V page 13.

You will see the word "oficio" a lot in this chapter. In the book they define it as "trade," which is fine, but you normally don't ask in English "what is your trade?" You ask "what is your job or what is your work or what do you do?" Well, "oficio" also means "work" or "chore."

Review/study the "Estructura" on page 28 and the "question words" mentioned under "¡Extra!"

You MUST also review the "Verbo Gustar." Check the links under "Fave" links with Señor Jordan videos. Review/study G&V page 15 and G&V page 16. Also check page 36 (in Vocabulario II).

Lección B -  Vocabulario II "¿Qué vemos esta noche?

Again, the Verbo Gustar is used extensively here. So, you MUST know how to use this verb and the other verbs that are conjugated the same way (encantar, fascinar, interesar, importar, molestar y parecer). Review/study the "Estructura" on page 38, Exercise No. 24 is important! Basically, pay attention to the nouns, if you want to say "I like tacos" - you say "Me gustan los tacos" (the noun is plural). If you want to say "I like pizza" - you say "Me gusta la pizza" (the noun is singular). If you are using an infinitive, then ALWAYS use "gusta" - "Me gusta comer pizza" or "Me gusta comer tacos."

¡Buena suerte!
